This book combines the proceedings of Mechanical Behavior of Nanomaterials - Experiments and Modeling, and Plasticity in Confined Volumes - Modeling and Experiments. These two symposia brought together researchers to exchange ideas about the mechanical behavior of materials where size, be it microstructural or geometric, plays an important role. Firstly it focuses on understanding the mechanical behavior of nanostructured materials, such as nanoscale thin films, nanowires, nanotubes, and nanoparticles, as well as nanoporous, nanograined and nanotwinned materials. Such materials with submicron length scales are important building blocks for next-generation functional devices and materials systems. The second focus is on understanding how micron and submicron external and internal microstructural-length scales play a defining role in the strength and ductility of a material. Modern simulation methods have revealed a diverse range of atomic and mesoscale processes that can contribute to the emergent plasticity of such complex materials. Topics include: nanostructured materials; polymers and composites; simulations and modeling and microcompression and nanoindentation.
Challenge your knowledge of ultrasound to address sexual health abnormalities and early pregnancy issues, alongside identifying, classifying and managing a wide range of gynaecological conditions, with this essential manual. Authored by experts in reproductive health, this bespoke guide delivers practitioners of all levels with a broad scope of sexual and reproductive disorders, as captured by ultrasound. Presenting operational issues and suggested training, this textbook ensures high-quality care in gynaecology, sexual and reproductive health and pregnancy advisory services. For use in a traditional hospital setting through to more remote locations, this guide provides an invaluable toolkit for trainees, sonographers, nurses and clinicians worldwide. Offering clear clinical ultrasound images and extensive case studies with a focus on pregnancy advisory services, this adaptable textbook provides reliable support for those who are in contact with common, rare and understudied reproductive conditions, wishing to achieve successful diagnosis and optimal imaging first time.
"Rare Earth Frontiers is a timely text. As Klinger notes, rare earths are neither rare nor technically earths, but they are still widely believed to be both. Although her approach focuses on the human, or cultural, geography of rare earths mining, she does not ignore the geological occurrence of these mineral types, both on Earth and on the moon.... This volume is excellently organized, insightfully written, and extensively sourced." ― Choice Rare Earth Frontiers is a work of human geography that serves to demystify the powerful elements that make possible the miniaturization of electronics, green energy and medical technologies, and essential telecommunications and defense systems. Julie Michelle Klinger draws attention to the fact that the rare earths we rely on most are as common as copper or lead, and this means the implications of their extraction are global. Klinger excavates the rich historical origins and ongoing ramifications of the quest to mine rare earths in ever more impossible places. Klinger writes about the devastating damage to lives and the environment caused by the exploitation of rare earths. She demonstrates in human terms how scarcity myths have been conscripted into diverse geopolitical campaigns that use rare earth mining as a pretext to capture spaces that have historically fallen beyond the grasp of centralized power. These include legally and logistically forbidding locations in the Amazon, Greenland, and Afghanistan, and on the Moon. Drawing on ethnographic, archival, and interview data gathered in local languages and offering possible solutions to the problems it documents, this book examines the production of the rare earth frontier as a place, a concept, and a zone of contestation, sacrifice, and transformation.

Crochet saves lives. It saved mine. In the worst throes of depression I found myself sobbing on the bathroom floor, the tip of a kitchen knife pointed into my wrist. I was aching to break the flesh and bring the pain to an end. Through sheer force of will, I pried my own desperate hands open and replaced the knife with a crochet hook. Then I crocheted to save my life. In this book, you will get to know me through my story of depression and healing. And you will get to know other women as well. You will meet Aurore who crochets to stay in touch with reality as she deals with ongoing psychiatric hallucinations. You will meet Laurie who made a new life with crochet after years of a life filled with abuse. You will meet Tammy whose crochet helps her with the ups and downs of living with Chronic Lyme Disease. You will meet Liza who crochets through the anxiety of having temporary bouts of blindness caused by an undiagnosed health condition. Here are some of the things you will hear them say: "When I crochet I don't think about how my body is now broken; I think about how I can create something beautiful and useful with my hook and either yarn or thread." -Vicki "When I'm anxious, I feel like a hollow hull. Crocheting helps fill up the void." - Aurore "I couldn't pay for therapy, but a few balls of crochet thread cost less than $20 and provided me with many hours of crochet." - M.K. "The feeling of the yarn and the rhythmic motions produced by crocheting are very quieting and help me regroup, recharge and become reconnected to my inner self amidst turmoil and confusion." - Aimee "Crochet helps me put my pain on the back burner for a while. It takes my focus away from how I'm feeling and puts it in a more productive place." - Shelli The two dozen women whose stories are shared in this book are the women who hook to heal. We are not alone. Studies shows that crocheters are numerous; research and anecdotal evidence show that people of all ages, from all walks of life, with all types of health conditions may find healing through their hooks and yarn. This is a true account of my time in New Orleans after Katrina. I spent my time there with my husband Dave rebuilding. This is a story of heartache, love, amazing and sometimes interesting people. Most of all, a story of unstoppable hope: https: //www.createspace.com/35549
